View from the Valley

By Chuck Kilbourne, Valley View Principal

"The Valley View school community is committed to ensuring a safe, nurturing environment. We provide a rich academic curriculum, which prepares all students to become self-reliant, productive and enlightened citizens reaching their full potential."

Valley View Elementary School (VV) is home of the Bear Cubs! (Caring and Understanding Brings Success) VV perfectly describes our beautiful location, perched upon a Rocklin hillside with stunning vistas of Clover Valley below; we are also home to a resident hawk.

He provides our students with a valuable lesson in nature as a third-grade class stops a spelling test to watch him swoop down and snatch a mouse for a snack.

We are one of 10 elementary schools, two middle schools, two comprehensive high schools and one alternative education high school in the Rocklin Unified School District. We welcomed our first 300 students in 2001.

VV currently embraces 640 students in grades K-6. K-3 classes have no more than 20 students and our 4th through 6th grade classes average 30 students.

Winding walkways lead to our central focal point, an open courtyard housing an outdoor amphitheater. VV's library contains a rapidly expanding collection of 8,473 books, a computerized library check-out system and a five-station computer reference area.

Our computer lab, located in the same building, has 32 computers, all connected to the district-wide-area network and the Internet. In addition, every classroom has at least three networked computers.

Our staff enthusiastically demonstrates a belief that meaningful and standards-driven schoolwork increases student learning.

Core subjects are typically presented in thematic or integrated units. VV places a strong emphasis on high

academic and behavioral expectations and on the development of respect and responsibility for all students. Our standardized test scores have risen consistently since we opened in 2001.

Our community sets a precedent for excellence, offering multiple services for children. In addition to a high-level core curriculum, all students are engaged in visual and performing arts instruction and physical education from certified specialists and visit the library and computer lab once a week.

For those students who may need extra assistance to succeed in school, VV provides a number of "safety nets." These include in-class, extended day, after school intervention in reading and math, and a Book Club. We believe learning takes place through a variety of methods and experiences, including field trips, hands-on learning, and specific instructional strategies so that all of our students succeed.

VV participates in several community service activities including collection cans for a local food bank, donating funds to the American Red Cross for tsunami and hurricane Katrina relief, Coats and Cans for Kids, and supporting the Ronald McDonald House.

VV children know the importance of giving back to their community. VV is located in the center of the Whitney Oaks area of Rocklin, which gives tremendous support expressed in an active Parent Teacher Club, School Site Council, an Art Docent Program, Garden of Learning, Springfield Retired Volunteers and through thousands of volunteer hours donated by parents.

Our facilities are used by a variety of organizations such as the Parks and Recreation Department, with whom we have a strong partnership, youth soccer, baseball, basketball, cheerleading and Girl Scouts. VV is a hub for many community activities.

Our staff, students, families and local businesses make up on exemplary group of learners and supporters. Our focus is lifelong learning in a caring, nurturing environment that allows all students and staff to reach their greatest potential.

Chuck Kilbourne is the principal of Valley View Elementary School.
